Is there a connection between water and mental health and well-being?

Staying hydrated has many benefits for our bodies but also for the mind.

A fresh glass of water is great for our bodies as it helps sustain their functions as well as supporting attention and memory.

How to stay hydrated throughout the day

The effects of water on the body will vary between people. It can also depend on factors such as how active a person is and the weather, age or gender. Through our collaboration with Mind charity, Sweat And Tears has shed light on the importance of hydration and its connection to mental well-being. This is why we wanted to make sure you knew how to stay hydrated throughout the day so that you can support your body and mind in the best way possible.

Eat more water-dense foods

Despite what people may think, it isn’t just the drinks (water) we consume that keep us hydrated. Around 20% of our daily fluid intake comes from the foods we eat.

There are certain fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of water as well as nutrients. Fruits such as watermelon, peaches, strawberries and vegetables such as cucumber, celery, tomatoes and leafy greens are all great ways to get some extra levels of H2O!

Drink, Train, Repeat!

Whilst working out the body loses large amounts of water. This varies from person to person, some tend to sweat more than others depending on their size, and gender. However, it is vitally important to stay hydrated whilst taking part in any form of physical exercise. Losing large amounts of fluid can be dangerous, which is why it’s important to drink more water when training.

Take small sips often

When it comes to hydration, gulping down large amounts of water in one sitting is not the best way to go; it’s better to remember the saying “little and often”.

Consuming large amounts of water in quick succession is unpleasant, and can leave you feeling bloated and unwell. Your body can handle hydration better when it comes in smaller doses.

Slow, and steady wins the race after all! You can, of course, add a little extra flavour to your water by adding fruits such as lemon, lime or berries.

Track your water intake

This is something that will help you make your water intake habits stick. Staying hydrated throughout the day can be tricky for a number of reasons, but making sure to track how much you drink is a simple way to stay on top of it!

Don’t worry if you miss a drink or two, life does sometimes get in the way. However, tracking is a great way to keep yourself accountable.

Getting enough water into the body is important for body and mind functions. The body is mainly made up of water, which is why most of the things we do on a daily basis depend on hydration. However, by making a commitment to healthy hydration, you can help ensure your body and mind stays resilient.
